Visiting the UK from Switzerland - Motrohome guide

There is plenty to choose from within the British borders – from Scottish castles to exciting musicals in the West End of London. A motorhome is the ideal way to travel, giving you total control over your itinerary and plenty of space for adventure.

Whatever your interests, there is likely to be somewhere in London that suits you. It is a hugely diverse city with many different landscapes and characters – busy shopping streets and rolling green spaces.

The West End

This is London’s theatre district. It is known to produce some of the best theatre performances in the world – including musicals, plays, comedy and unique shows. The West End is also host to many red carpet movie premieres – most of the cinemas are located in Leicester Square.

There are plenty of opportunities for fine dining in the West End, with more Michelin-starred restaurants than in any other UK postcode!

Location: The West End entertainment district includes Leicester Square and Covent Garden.

Buckingham Palace

Probably the most famous heritage building in the UK, Buckingham Palace is an opulent delight to visit. It is a working palace, essentially the ‘office’ of the Queen of England. As it is still in use, the Palace is only open to visitors on select dates from the 25th July to the 25th September.

A visit to the Palace may well include the famous ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony, which takes place at 11.30am. From April until the end of July there will be daily ceremonies, and for the rest of the year it occurs on alternate days, weather permitting.

Location: Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA

Richmond Park

This is the largest of the Royal Parks, and is also recognised as a National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation. It is home to 650 deer who relax in the park alongside the visitors. Richmond Park has a beautiful landscape of hills and ancient woodland, packed full of English wildlife.

You can go fishing at the Pen Pond, plus there are cycling paths and plenty of space for a decent walk. Unusually, there is an organic woodland garden, known as the Isabella Plantation within Richmond Park. Pembroke Lodge has fantastic views over the area and serves food indoors and out.

The South West Coast Path

This walking route covers 630 miles of beautiful coastline. It has been voted one of the top walks anywhere in the world by the Lonely Planet, and it’s not hard to see why. If you don’t fancy walking the whole 630 miles, there are numerous short walk itineraries which you can choose from based on your interests and abilities.

The path begins in Minehead in Somerset, and concludes at Poole Harbour in Dorset – crossing some of the most remarkable heritage, geology, wildlife and scenery in the country.

Location: Minehead to Poole.

The Eden Project

The Eden Project is a destination like no other. Large ‘biomes’ house the world’s largest undercover rainforest, with walkways right up into the highest reaches. There are creative modern sculptures, living art and stunning gardens. The Eden Project is committed to leading the way in sustainability, and they do extensive work in the community to create positive change.

The Eden Project regularly hosts gigs and concerts, and in the winter they have an undercover ice rink. Children (and adults!) can take a free ride on their land train, and the café serves fair trade, local food.

Western Scotland

Some of the most striking natural beauty in the country lies in the western part of Scotland. From the green mountainous highlands to the white sandy beaches running along the Atlantic coast, there is everything you could wish for. The Western Isles are just a short ferry trip from the coast, and are home to unique local culture and traditions.

There are many delightful towns and villages along the west, such as Inverary – the most popular tourist destination, and Tarbert – a quaint fishing village on Loch Fyne. Fort William in the north is the gateway to the Highlands and Ben Nevis – the UK’s highest mountain.

The Ben Nevis Distillery

If you are interested in Scottish whisky production, the Ben Nevis Distillery is a great place to start. It stands within sight of the famous mountain, and highland cows graze out the front, completing the Scottish image! The clean pure water from the mountains contributes to the unique quality of the whisky – which has been in production since 1825.

Visitors can take a guided tour of the distillery, and purchase gifts and samples from the shop.

Without doubt, Stonehenge is the most important ancient monument in the UK. Throughout history people have been fascinated by the mysterious stones, and they attract thousands of visitors every year. Some archaeologists believe it was a pagan temple, whilst others believe it represented the doorway to the afterlife.

There is an excellent visitor centre onsite, with a simulated 360-degree view from the centre of the stones, life-size Neolithic houses where you can witness ancient skills, and archaeological displays from the local landscape.
