A Motorhome Tour of The Australian Red Centre

A tour through the Australian Red Centre has to be the ultimate motorhome adventure – a challenge for any enthusiast! Here we are presenting a suggested itinerary that you may like to use when planning your trip, or just daydreaming about where you want to go next…

Coober Pedy

Your tour starts in the outback town of Coober Pedy – a town famous for its opal mining. Opals were first discovered in Coober Pedy in the early 1900s and since then it has been one of the main suppliers of opals to the world. Coober Pedy also has a unique style of underground living – and you can visit some underground homes and underground museums too. 15km north of Coober Pedy is Moon Plain – a vast expanse of rocky plains that closely resembles the moon.

Ayers Rock

No trip through the heart of Australia would be complete without a visit to the iconic Ayers Rock. This monolithic chunk of red sandstone is a staggering 350m tall, and it descends even farther below ground-level. It is possible to climb Ayers Rock, and walk the 10Km around it, but this isn’t recommended in high summer as it can get extremely hot. The best time to view the rock is at sunrise and sunset, when the striking red tones of the sandstone pick up the violet and blue hues of the sky – a truly breath-taking experience.

Kings Canyon

Travelling North from Ayers Rock to Alice Springs will bring you to the delightful Kings Canyon. There are some excellent walking paths around the Canyon – taking you through a network of sandstone domes and past lushly vegetated waterholes. There are 300m high cliffs surrounding the enchanting Kings Creek, dubbed the ‘Garden of Eden’ in honour of its lush scenery.

The Red Centre Way

Out of Kings Canyon and it’s time to hit the Red Centre Way to Alice Springs. This highway takes you through many Aboriginal settlements (some do not allow visitors) and magical open land.

Alice Springs

Alice Springs is one of Australia’s most famous outback towns, and it certainly is unique. Surrounded by countless miles of red sand desert, and boasting a colourful history of gold-miners, pioneers and bandits, it is sure not to disappoint the tourist. You can even join a camel ride as an unusual way of seeing the sights while you are there!

Tennant Creek and the Barkly Region

This area is home to rich grasslands, and as a result it is the main cattle ranching region. Mining has also been a large feature of Tennant Creek and this has shaped the area. Tennant Creek has been dubbed ‘The Best Kept Secret of the Region’ because it has so much more to offer the visitor than may at first meet the eye.

The Nitmiluk National Park

This National park is owned by the Aboriginal people and features many dramatic gorges, valleys and spectacular sandstone countryside. The key attraction of the Park is the deep Gorge dissected by the Katherine River – a truly amazing sight.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, and it is a relaxed, tropical city. Here you can visit Aboriginal art galleries and cruise down crocodile-filled rivers…whatever takes your fancy!
