Festival history

The festival was born in 2004 - courtesy of Medicine Music’s Rob Ellen - with a rapid rise to popularity. The mix of a family-friendly atmosphere, eclectic music and a beautiful backdrop make for a special festival. Aside from the musical offerings – Tartan Heart brings a wide selection of stalls, therapy tents, sideshows and even a barber!

The festival sets out to present the best music and performing arts around – with something for all age groups. They have a big family camping area, and even offer free entry to under 12’s.

The Tartan Heart Fringe

If you are in the area in the two weeks leading up to the festival – you can enjoy a series of Fringe events in local venues. The Fringe is a mix of performance acts and musical genres – more details will be publicised nearer to the time.

Previous festivals

The festival started out as a one-day event in 2004, and by 2005 it had grown exponentially into a much larger event with five stages over two days. 2005 saw Alabama 3, The Bluetones and the Proclaimers headlining.

Fast forward to 2008, and the Tartan Heart Festival won an award for the ‘Best Grass Roots Festival’. Since then, headline acts have included Scouting for Girls, The Waterboys, Idlewild, The Editors, Ocean Colour Scene, Travis, The Buzzcocks and many more.

Diverse local music

Tartan Heart doesn’t just focus on giving a stage to big nationally known names (as with many festivals). They have always been committed to supporting up and coming bands, as well as diverse local and traditional performers.

Over the years these have included groups such as the Teenage Gaelic Singing Group, Willie Campbell from the Hebridean Isle of Lewis and Feis Rois – a charity giving people a chance to learn traditional Scots instruments.

The Verb Garden

In 2014, Tartan Heart presented a very special opportunity to hold debates on pressing subjects like climate change, body image and fashion, raptors in Scotland (!) and Scottish independence. Visitors could also witness intimate interviews with stars such as Grandmaster Flash and Billy Bragg.

2015 rumours

For 2015, The Proclaimers have been invited back to headline Thursday night – offering an expanded experience to the committed visitors. The Scottish duo headlined Tartan Heart a decade ago, and they will be bringing their iconic sound to the Highlands once again next year.

About the area

If you are planning to make the festival into a holiday, Inverness – known as the Capital of the Highlands - is a place worth exploring. Many famous Scottish landmarks can be found in this area, and the beautiful Highland landscape is worth its weight in gold.

The Culloden Battlefield

East of Inverness is the site of the Battle of Culloden – a historic confrontation between the Scots Jacobites and the English loyalists. Visitors to the site today can see memorials of the battle, as well as the Old Leanach cottage which survived the conflict – and has traditional heather thatching on the roof. There is a well-equipped visitor centre with dynamic exhibitions and a gift shop.

The Caledonian Canal to Loch Ness

The beautiful Caledonian Canal passes through Scotland’s Great Glen, an old fault line in the mountains. It runs from Fort William down to Inverness and includes the famous Loch Ness.

Mighty Loch Ness is 23 miles long, and there are many interesting places on its shore. The Falls of Foyers flow from the River Foyer, which feeds into Loch Ness. They are a spectacular sight and fall over 185ft.

Moray Firth Dolphins

The Moray Firth is an excellent place to see dolphins. The best place to go is Canonry Point, Cromarty which is near to Inverness. This is one of their favourite places to find food and gives you the highest chance of a sighting. Sometimes it’s even possible to see harbour porpoises and minke whales!
