Ladbrokes St Leger Festival

History of the St Leger

The St Leger race first took place in 1776, as a 2-mile sweepstake for colts and fillies. It is known to be the oldest of all the British Classic races:

  • One Thousand Guineas
  • Two Thousand Guineas
  • Epsom Derby
  • Epsom Oaks
  • And of course, the St Leger

This race took place on the Cantley Common in Doncaster, and was won by the Marquis of Rockingham’s filly. A similar sweepstake was held the following years, and the Marquis suggested it was named the St Leger Stakes in honour of a friend and local sportsman – Anthony St Leger.

The location was then changed to Town Moor (where it remains to this day), although also been held in other locations such as Thirsk, Newmarket and Manchester during the war.

The only year when the St Leger has been cancelled was Sunday 3rd September 1939 when war with Germany was declared. Otherwise it’s been run every single year since 1776!
