The Second World War had taken its toll on the cultural and creative life of the UK. The founder of the Festival, Rudolf Bing had the intention to “provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit”, and performers from all over the world were invited. He chose Edinburgh as the host city, as it offered ample venues and a picturesque location.

A festival for everyone

One of the central purposes of the International Festival was to bring cultural and social benefits to the whole of Scotland – not just those who were able to attend the events. The organisers also actively encouraged people to put on their own performances during the festival period, a practice which eventually grew into the Fringe Festival.

With Unbeatable Hire - our Motorhome packages can be tailroed for everyone! With includive bed sheets, cutlery and everything you need our range of sizes can suit any family, small or large!

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo

This event has always been an integral part of the Edinburgh International Festival. When the festival began, the British Army wanted to showcase their cultural talents – and the Tattoo was born.

The Modern Festival

The Festival today aims to bring the highest quality of performing arts to the widest possible audience. It also showcases Scottish culture and brings a rich mix of international culture to the UK.

Many well-known names attended the 2014 Festival, including the Kronos Quartet, the Czech Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the National Theatres of England and Scotland.

The festival examined the topic of war – with moving performances from 43 nations. There were many unique performances on the subject, including a hand puppet representation of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission. There was a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, which had been written for the re-opening of the war-ravaged Coventry Cathedral in the 60’s.

The Festival City; with world premieres, classics, foreign language theatre and amazing local talent, there is certainly something for everyone at the Festival. Juliette Binoche stars in Antigone, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra are set to delight plus too many more acts to mention! Check the latest and plan your diary by following the link.

Truly Eclectic

Alongside the performances were a number of talks and workshops looking at the subject of war, and a conversation with the renowned Scottish Hebrides Ensemble.

The festival saw a world premiere of Inala – which brought together an eclectic mix of Zulu music and traditional ballet, and a performance of Patria by Paco Peña's Flamenco company.
