The Bram Stoker International Film Festival

The Bram Stoker International Film Festival.jpgWhy Whitby?

Whitby is known as the birthplace of Dracula. In 1890, Bram Stoker visited the town and whilst browsing in a local library he came across the name ‘Dracula’.

This inspired him to name his iconic character and the rest was history! Whitby features throughout the story, and festival visitors can retrace the steps of the characters through the town.

The films

A wide range of film types are shown throughout the festival – including shorts, documentaries and narrative features. Festivalgoers have the opportunity to see films which they may never find anywhere else – promising a uniquely immersive experience in this culture of horror.

A number of awards are given out at the festival, including Best Film, Best SFX and an Audience award.

Side events

The films are not the only reason horror fans love this festival. They host a range of other entertainments including the Dark Arts exhibition, themed event nights, theatre and the horrifyingly famous Vampire’s Ball.

Whitby

Whitby lies on the seaside, and it is a popular tourist destination. It’s perfectly placed with access to traditional English seaside and the wilderness of the North Yorkshire Moors. The busy harbour is flanked by the Grade II Listed piers on the East and West side.

Whitby Abbey

The Abbey is an imposing building which looks out to the North Sea. It featured in the Dracula novel and visitors today will not be hard pushed to see why! In the story, a large dog-like beast emerged from the sea, and climbed up 199 steps to the Abbey.

It was established in 657AD and a significant proportion of the building can still be seen.

Other places worth visiting

If you have traveled a long way for the Festival, then why not make the most of your motorhome and spend some time seeing the local sights? Yorkshire is a beautiful county with a real mix of attractions.

The Dinosaur Coast

The coastline of Whitby is part of the ‘North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast’, otherwise known as the Dinosaur Coast. At the Whitby beach it is even possible to see dinosaur footprints – as well as ammonites and the best part of a complete crocodile! In the 1800’s a huge Plesiosaurus fossil was discovered, and many more can be seen at the Rotunda Museum in Scarborough.

York Dungeon

If you are still in the mood for a bit of horror after the Film Festival, then York Dungeon will be your next stop. It’s a humorous 70-minute trip into the dark recesses of York’s history – through the last 2000 years. It uses a dynamic mix of actors, special effects and carefully crafted scenes to thrill and terrify.

The North Yorkshire Moors

The Moors are wild and beautiful. Visitors will not fail to be moved by the rich moorland, and striking dales and headlands. There are ancient woodlands and sweeping bands of heather, alongside rugged ice age coastline and haunting natural beauty. At night, the skies are unpolluted by any light and perfect for stargazing.
