Brentwood - Camping & Motohome Guide


Brentwood lay along an old Roman road from London to Colchester so has been an important transit spot for centuries. Nowadays it is home to many London commuters, and famous for the TV show The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE). The show focuses on the glamour and aspirations of some of the Brentwood residents, and has been a big hit locally and nationally.

Famous names from Brentwood include Ross Kemp, Noel Edmonds, Griff Rhys Jones and Frank Bruno.

Imperial War Museum North

Thorndon Country Park is a Brentwood must-see if you are seeking the great outdoors. It is set in stunning countryside, and offers interesting activities for all generations.

Young Gruffalo fans will enjoy the specially designed Gruffalo Trail, which has carved figures from the Gruffalo books to follow and an activity map which can be collected from the Countryside Centre for 50p. Older children (and adults) can take part in an orienteering course for a map fee of £2.50, also available from the Countryside Centre. The Pebble Walk offers an interesting insight into global periods of climate change, with evidence from various geological deposits.

Day licenses for fishing are available, but you must have an Environment Agency rod license to fish at Thornden. Bikes can be hired from Trailnet onsite, and there is a wide selection of routes around the park.

The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

Older children and curious adults will enjoy this intriguing attraction, which boasts its status as the 'biggest and deepest cold war bunker' which can be visited by the public in the SE England.

The bunker has served various functions over the years, and most recently was adapted to house up to 600 military and civilian personnel in the event of a nuclear war. It was decommissioned in 1992, and is now open to the public for exploration.

The Bunker shares 25 acres of land with two other attractions – The SkateBarn with its synthetic 'ice skating' rink, and Rope Runners – a high ropes adventure course for the brave amongst you!

The Bunker is open 7 days a week in the summer, and Thursday to Sunday in the winter (November - February)

Places of Interest in Brentwood

Rayleigh Windmill

This stunning windmill is over 200 years old and a real Essex landmark which is popular for weddings and photoshoots. It is open to be explored, and also contains an exhibition space and a museum.

The windmill is open every day from March to September, and entry is free of charge (donations are very welcome).

Tilbury Fort

The first fortifications here were built by Henry VIII, and this fort was involved in protecting England during the Armada. The fort is described as one of the best examples of its type in England, so if you are in the area with your motorhome then it is well worth a visit. There are moats and bastions, as well as gunpowder stores which you can explore.

The Fort is open Wednesday to Sunday, under 5's go free.
